During the market meltdown which is what is happening now (which potentially may get worse --- who knows at this point due to escalating crisis in Europe that may or may not affect the rest of the world very negatively), it is very easy for any family, wives and husbands, parents, children, siblings, to trigger small or large tensions and/or to escalate existing tensions among family members due to declining net-worth of the family and different and competing views on how to appropriately handle the declining markets.  The undeniable fact is majority of families in the US have large percentage of their net-worth tied to stock markets (e.g.: 401k, IRA, Roth IRA, ESPP, employer stock options, other tax-deferred accounts, and also various taxable investment accounts), not just real-estate (which many have been burned badly in the past 2-3 years.) Again and again, the global equity markets including US markets, are cruel to people who trust majority of their retirements in the hands of the markets.
